Why people choose Ryan's Voice

Speak in 2 seconds, not 90

Typing a sentence letter by letter takes over a minute. Conversations don't wait. In Ryan's Voice, one tap on a large tile speaks a whole phrase.

The right words find you

With Smart Voice, the app listens to the conversation and shows phrases that fit. When the topic changes, the suggestions change with it.

Nothing leaves the phone

Everything — including the AI — runs on the device. No account, no cloud, no data collection. It works in a hospital basement or the middle of the ocean.

Adult words, respectful design

1,120+ phrases at real conversational depth, from years of real therapy sessions. Big tiles built for motor-planning differences. Never a toddler interface for a capable mind.

Built by a father for his son

Ryan is a nonverbal autistic teenager with apraxia of speech. His mind works at college level; his body can't coordinate the muscles to speak. The apps we tried either talked down to him or demanded precise tapping his motor planning couldn't give. So his father — an orthopaedic surgeon — built something different.

Five years of Ryan's real words from therapy sessions, powered by on-device AI, in an app that respects his intelligence. Core communication is not paywalled, because being able to say "I am in pain" should not depend on a budget.

The details, if you want them

The research behind the design

Published research reports aided AAC communication rates typically under 15 words per minute — and as low as 2–5 for letter-by-letter spelling (Beukelman & Light, 2020). Ryan types at 4 words per minute; a six-word sentence takes him over 90 seconds. Ryan's Voice replaces that with a two-second tap. The phrase library covers 100% of the Universal Core 36 (UNC Chapel Hill Center for Literacy and Disability Studies) and includes college-level phrases like "She seems disappointed by the outcome" — captured from real sessions.

Designed around motor strengths

Apraxia is a motor-planning disorder, not a cognitive one. Phrase tiles never drop below a 60pt touch floor — primary tiles run 90–140pt, well above Apple's 44pt minimum. A horizontal swipe changes categories: a fluid motion many apraxia users retain when precise pointing is hard. Layouts show 4–8 large tiles, never a wall of symbols, and every action confirms with haptics. A symbol-based mode pairs pictures with words using the open-licensed Mulberry symbol set.

Privacy, in depth

The microphone is used for real-time, on-device speech recognition only. Audio is never recorded, stored, or transmitted. Speech recognition, topic detection, phrase ranking, and AI generation all run on the phone — no server calls, no account, no analytics, no tracking. If Rockshore disappeared tomorrow, the app would keep working. Full details in the privacy policy.

What's coming next

Adaptive ranking (your most-used phrases rise to the top), Personal Voice integration, Author Mode — AI writing tools to help users write and publish real stories — and DreamBot phone calls. Ryan wants to be a published author; Author Mode is being built to make that possible. Join the waitlist to hear when Author Voice ships.

Comparing AAC apps?

We keep honest, clinically grounded guides: Ryan's Voice vs Proloquo2Go, the best AAC app for apraxia, and free AAC for adults. A speech-language pathologist should guide any AAC decision — and trialling Ryan's Voice costs nothing.
