An AAC app for adults
Adults deserve communication choices that fit their language, identity and access needs. Ryan's Voice provides ready-to-use phrases, symbols, text and personal phrases, and the person decides what is spoken.
"My needs are different, not less."
— one of the ready-to-use phrases in Ryan's Voice. The vocabulary leaves room for nuance and self-advocacy.
Two practical barriers
1. Paying before fit is known
It can be difficult to judge whether an AAC approach fits before using it in real situations. Being able to trial the core app without a purchase gives the person, family and clinician room to explore the interaction before considering an optional paid feature.
2. Language and presentation may not fit
An adult may want complete phrases, mature topics and a discreet interface, while another person may prefer a symbol-first vocabulary or a system built around a learned motor plan. The important question is whether the language and access route fit the individual.
What an adult may look for
- Adult vocabulary by default — nuanced, precise, emotionally granular language.
- A professional interface — not cartoons; a tool an adult is happy to use in public.
- A way to trial first — try the core app before considering an optional purchase.
- Clear privacy boundaries — what is processed, stored and shared is explained precisely.
- Efficient access — common messages do not always have to be built letter by letter.
Compare the fit, not only the price
Ask whether the person can trial the actual interaction, whether their preferred vocabulary and access method are supported, how easily they can refuse or repair a message, what works offline, what data is stored, and what support is available. Prices and features change, so verify each product's current listing before deciding.
Why Ryan's Voice
Ryan's Voice began in Ryan's family. His parents built it with him after seeing how motor-planning demands could obstruct the communication he wanted to share. That origin shaped several current choices:
- Included with the download. More than 1,000 ready-to-use phrases, text-to-speech, favourites, Quick SOS, personal phrases, text input and a symbol-based route.
- Complete phrases with emotional and social nuance, ready to use.
- Context-aware choices with Smart Voice, based on nearby speech transcribed on the device, while the person decides what is spoken.
- Large-touch, phrase-level interaction — generous tiles and swipe navigation provide one route to trial. More on apraxia design →
Who may consider it: adults and older young people who cannot rely on speech alone and can use touch or, from version 3.2, Switch Control. Suitability depends on language, access method, communication preferences, environment and support needs.
